I thank you for a very nice and concise explanation of SSl. If others that have seen your post think they need more details, then they should just do more searching! A far as I am concerned I think it explains it very well for those that just want to know what SSL is.
I would, however, like to point out that nothing transmitted over the internet is ever totally “secure”. Security over the internet is only accomplished by “trusting” someone else. If that “someone” happens to be compromised. well your privacy is gone. See http://www.networkworld.com/news/2011/090611-comodo-hacker-claims-credit-for-250454.html for an example. I am not an alarmist, I just hope people are aware.

Thank you... Thank you... Thank you !!! I have spent 1 hour and fifteen minutes on the computer trying to find out what SSL means.
I have read articles and spent time on wordpress trying to find out what these three simple letters mean. I have read articles, which sent me around to other articles, to find out what those 3 letters mean, on hostgator, and wordpress. Finally, I got out of all that stuff and rebooted, and got on google, and asked what does SSL mean? I then clicked on your answer. It means "Secure Sockets Layer" ! Perfectly logical. Why couldnt they just tell me that in the beginning of all this, 1 hour and fifteen minutes ago? You have answered my question, simply, and clearly, and I am eternally grateful to you!! GOD, sometimes I really hate computers...
